Study, sitting for long periods of time is linked to heart disease

Sitting for long periods of time can be a risk for heart disease even if you are active in your spare time.

According to the researchers, sitting for a long time should be avoided.

"Our findings really emphasize the importance of avoiding sitting for long periods of time, regardless of whether or not you are physically active," said first study author Dr. Ezim Ajufo, a cardiology fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

The researchers add that more research is needed to understand exactly the risks of sitting for long periods of time.

Researchers looked at data from nearly 90,000 people who wore an accelerometer for a week and compared their time spent sitting and being active with later diagnoses of conditions like stroke, heart attack, and stroke, according to the American College of Cardiology study.

They further suggested that 10.6 hours a day of sitting is excessive and increases the risk of heart disease.

"We would really recommend that as many people as possible avoid sitting for more than 10.6 hours a day," Ajufo said. "This is not a hard and fast threshold, but we think it is a reasonable first step for public health guidance and intervention."

Why is sitting for long periods of time beneficial?

Muscles are very important for regulating blood sugar and fat levels. To do their job well, muscles need movement.

So if you work in an office and sit for a very long time, you need to find a way to move around.

How to move

The important thing is to add movement to your day. Diaz recommends getting up and walking for just a few minutes every half hour or when you finish one task before moving on to the next.

Unfortunately, the data suggests that a good workout at the end of the day won't necessarily solve the problems caused by long periods of sitting.

According to the researchers, even if after staying in the office for hours you exercise, run and walk fast, there will be no change in your condition, although they suggest that physical activity should not be neglected./ CNA
