Kosovo-Britain pact for housing asylum seekers/ Analyst: Temporary solution
Altin Gjeta

Altin Gjeta, an analyst and lecturer at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, spoke in an interview with CNA TV about the Berlin Process summit being held in London and the talks taking place there.

Asked about the Pristina-London pact for housing in Kosovo asylum seekers rejected by Britain, he said he is skeptical of such solutions because, according to him, they do not address the underlying problem.

He added that this pact is also of interest to Kosovo, although it may not work, because it needs the continued support of the United Kingdom in defense and security issues. This is because it has a neighbor in the north like Serbia.

"I was invited by a prestigious institute in London, which deals with security and defense issues. And of course it was a closed meeting where some of the issues were discussed and I cannot give details about this. The United Kingdom, as I said, is trying to build centers, centers for processing illegal immigrants in one or several of the Western Balkan countries. How much this will be realized in practice, I cannot say, but personally I am reiterating once again, I am skeptical of such temporary solutions because this does not address the problem at its core.

Although, as we have seen with the agreement with Italy, it has not worked, because human rights organizations, the judicial system have challenged the legality of these centers. But if we think about it in a slightly more strategic and political plan, they should consider it as an opportunity within their capacity. Within their capacity, of course in exchange for mutual interest. And Kosovo in particular has an interest in the continued support of the United Kingdom in defense and security issues, because in the north there is a neighbor, which is Serbia, which has not accepted the fact that Kosovo is an independent state, it is a political reality, and has used every mechanism to destabilize it, to cause problems in the north, to withdraw the international recognitions that have been granted to Kosovo, and to present Kosovo to the international factor as a failed state. "And I think that in this context, I certainly do not undertake to advise the Kosovo government, because it has the mechanisms, it has information, but I think that if it considers it within its capacities, it would be in the interest of Kosovo due to the fragility of the position it is in in relation to Serbia, but also in general with other processes related to security and defense," said analyst Gjeta. /CNA
