"There are MPs who misspell syllables"/ Nora Malaj raises the alarm about functional illiteracy

2026-07-04 18:14:00, Aktualitet CNA

Albania is facing two forms of illiteracy, a phenomenon that according to Nora Malaj is taking on worrying proportions. In an interview for CNA TV, the former Deputy Minister of Education stated that one is related to people aged 30 to 40, while the other is functional illiteracy among young people.

According to her, many of them have attended or received diplomas without actually gaining the necessary knowledge. Malaj said that the consequences of this phenomenon are also visible in public life, noting that there are young MPs who encounter difficulties in reading and understanding texts. She added that the fact that these people have completed university studies makes the situation even more worrying. According to Malaj, this shows that the education system has suffered serious weaknesses in ensuring quality.

She described this as a critical point, emphasizing that education needs deep and immediate interventions.

"From the things that I think are the biggest problems today, we have two phenomena that are a serious wound. The first phenomenon is the illiteracy of the 30-40 year old age group, of that age group that made various exodus and went to different countries and returned without finishing the education system and we have illiterates, so we have not completed the 9-year or 8-year cycle then. And we have functional illiteracy that is related to the tendency of those young people who wanted to attend many schools, or want to attend one school without actually being there and this is called licensing ignorance with the level of a university diploma. We unfortunately also notice this in some of the young people, deputies who have entered parliament, who are unable to comprehend and understand what is written to them. Although they may have done well or poorly at university, this becomes even more serious and shows that at this point the attitude has reached a point where it no longer holds up to the people's words ," said Malaj.
