The story of the Christmas tree

Modern Christmas trees originated in Central Europe and the Baltic states, especially Estonia, Germany and Latvia. 

Its origins in the 16th century are sometimes associated with the Protestant Christian reformer Martin Luther, who is said to have first added lit candles to an evergreen tree.

The Christmas tree was first recorded in use by German Lutherans in the 16th century, with records showing that a Christmas tree was placed in Strasbourg Cathedral in 1539 under the leadership of the Protestant reformer, Martin Butcher. 

Moravian Christians placed lighted candles on those trees.

The earliest known, dated representation of a Christmas tree is on the cornerstone sculpture of a private house in Turckheim, Alsace dated 1576./ CNA
