Abandoned villages, the Albanian reality that is deepening

As you move through the villages of Albania, the pleasant landscape created by nature seems to be obscured by a few empty huts, old doors, and barely standing walls.

The abandonment of villages is a reality that is often encountered in Albania, and one that seems to be deepening day by day.

The lack of jobs, low incomes from agriculture and livestock, poor infrastructure, and limited services have forced residents of many villages in the country to consider living options elsewhere, with Tirana as a metropolis undoubtedly among their choices.

The abandonment of villages has not only social and economic consequences, but is also accompanied by numerous demographic risks. Year after year, more and more residents, especially young people, are leaving for cities or even abroad, in search of better job opportunities and a higher standard of living.

As a result, schools in these villages are on the verge of closing, as the single-digit number of students leaves no other choice, economic activity has shrunk, and agricultural lands have been left fallow.

This phenomenon is also creating cultural consequences, as with the departure of residents, the traditions, crafts, and heritage of these areas are at risk of being lost.

The remaining residents in the villages that are being abandoned are calling for more investment in infrastructure, agriculture, rural tourism, and public services, in the hope that these measures can help restore life in the villages and create better opportunities for younger generations.

The future of many villages in Albania seems to be 'hanging by a thread', while the challenge of curbing abandonment continues to be one of the most important issues for the development of rural areas and opens a debate on the role of social policies and not only, which can lead to the reversal of this phenomenon./CNA
