Criminal Amnesty enters into force, hundreds of convicts leave prisons today/

The implementation of the Criminal Amnesty has begun, bringing changes to the situation of hundreds of convicts in Albanian prisons. The law approved by the Parliament and decreed by the President has already entered into force, allowing for releases, reductions in sentences and other benefits for certain categories.

According to preliminary data from prison institutions, over 1,300 people are expected to benefit from this amnesty. Some of them will leave their cells immediately, while others will have the remaining time of their sentence reduced.

Release procedures have begun in several prisons. In Lushnja, around 120 convicts are expected to be released, in Fier around 98 people, while in several other institutions, such as Korça, Fushë-Kruja and Pojskë, procedures are being implemented for beneficiaries according to the criteria of the law.

The amnesty measure benefits convicts who meet the specified conditions, including short sentences, certain age categories, and women or persons who were minors at the time of committing the criminal offense.

Meanwhile, the law excludes persons convicted of serious criminal offenses from the scheme, as well as issues related to the jurisdiction of SPAK and decisions of the GJKKO.

Authorities have begun verifying files to definitively determine the list of beneficiaries, while the implementation of the amnesty is expected to continue in the coming days in all institutions for the execution of criminal decisions./ CNA
