VIDEO/ Argentina breaks rules, players display political slogan after victory

Argentina's national team players have openly defied strict FIFA rules after their triumph over England, unfurling a clearly political slogan during qualifying celebrations.

Despite the fact that the international football organization strictly prohibits messages of this nature at official events, Argentine footballers took from the stands and unfurled in front of the fans a banner that read "The Malvinas are Argentine."

The gesture is linked to the historical and military conflict between the two countries in the 1980s over control of the Falkland Islands. The issue is a recurring theme in Argentine fans' chants, but this time it was used as a message by the players themselves on the pitch.

Although the regulation provides for strict sanctions for such actions, it remains unclear whether FIFA will take disciplinary measures against the reigning champions.
