FIFA surprises, changes regulations for the World Cup

FIFA has implemented a significant change to the World Cup ranking criteria, deciding that head-to-head matches will take precedence over goal difference in the event of a tie on points.

This rule had an immediate impact in the group stage, where the USA, led by Mauricio Pochettino, secured qualification after a 2-0 victory over Australia with an own goal from Cameron Burgess and a goal from Alex Freeman.

Meanwhile, Turkey were eliminated after a 1-0 loss to Paraguay, while Haiti were eliminated after a 3-0 defeat to Brazil. Although they could theoretically have tied their rivals on points, losses in head-to-head matches left them out of the competition.

Mexico have also benefited from the new system, securing passage to the round of 32 after victories over South Africa and South Korea. The change could also affect Group L, where Thomas Tuchel's England and Ghana could benefit in the race for first place.

According to FIFA, the aim of this rule is to reduce the impact of victories by large margins and create a more balanced competition.
