Turkish authorities have issued arrest warrants for 21 people, including 17 referees and the president of a prominent club, as part of an investigation into a major betting scandal involving Turkish football.
According to the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office, 18 of them have been arrested so far. The investigations follow statements by the head of the Turkish Football Federation, Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, who revealed that 371 of the 571 active referees in the country had accounts on online betting sites.
The federation has suspended 149 referees and assistants for involvement in such activities, calling them a serious breach of sporting ethics. According to the official statement, the penalties for those involved range from eight to twelve months.
It has not yet been clarified whether some of the referees placed bets on matches they were officiating. The scandal is being considered one of the biggest in Turkish football history and has opened a deep crisis in the country's governing institutions of sports.
