USA loses main striker, FIFA rules do not allow appeal

The United States will be without Folarin Balogun in the 2026 World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium.

The American forward was sent off in the win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite having scored the opening goal earlier. Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute after referee Raphael Claus overturned the initial decision following a VAR review.

Initially, only a free kick was awarded, but the tackle on Tarik Muharemovic was later ruled a serious foul. The decision has sparked debate among fans and analysts, who compared the incident to other similar incidents during the tournament.

However, FIFA regulations automatically impose a one-match suspension for every direct red card, so the USA has no way to appeal the punishment.

Balogun will only be available again if the Americans manage to qualify for the quarterfinals.
