Mahrez ends his international career, announces retirement

Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from the Algeria national team following their elimination from the World Cup.

The Algerian captain announced the decision after the 2-0 loss to Switzerland in the round of 16.

The 35-year-old striker ends his international career after a long and successful period with the national team.

Mahrez scored twice in the final group game against Austria at the World Cup. He confirmed to beIN Sports that the match against Switzerland was his last match for Algeria.

During his international career, Mahrez played 119 matches, scored 40 goals and registered 45 assists. He was part of the team that won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. In 2016, Mahrez was also named African Footballer of the Year.
