List/ Blow for Italy, Gattuso loses main striker

Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso has released his list of players for the World Cup play-offs. The main newcomer is Marco Palestra, the defender born in 2005, who receives his first call-up after playing for Cagliari.

Federico Chiesa returns to the national team after an absence since Euro 2024, replacing Zaccagni.

Giorgio Scalvini and Niccolò Pisilli have also returned to the list, after being absent during 2024. Italy will not have goalkeeper Vicario available due to a surgical procedure.

The attack has suffered another absence, as Gianluca Scamacca is injured and has not been recalled.

The national team will begin preparations in Coverciano for the March 26 challenge against Northern Ireland in Bergamo. In case of victory, Italy will play on March 31 in a away match against the winner of the Wales-Bosnia and Herzegovina match.
