Winter champion, how much does it weigh on the final title in Serie A

In football, it is often said that championships are won in March, but Serie A data shows that the standings at the end of the calendar year carry special weight. Historically, only in about 50% of cases has the team leading on December 31st won the title at the end of the season.

However, an analysis of the last 11 championships, from the 2014/2015 season to the last one, shows that in 6 cases the year-end leader has been declared champion. An important exception is the period 2019–2022, which is considered a statistical anomaly.

In these three seasons, Inter and Milan have lost the title despite finishing the year in first place. Conte's Inter in 2019 and Inzaghi's in 2021 were overtaken by Juventus and Milan, respectively.

In 2020, Pioli's Milan led at the end of the year, but the title went to Inter. From the 2022–2023 season, a clear change in trend is noticeable. Napoli and Inter have shown continuity by maintaining the lead from winter to the end. This suggests a stabilization of the title race in Serie A. Continuity is becoming an increasingly decisive factor.
