Iran out of the World Cup? FIFA's scenarios revealed

The statement by the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, has raised questions about Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup.

Pending an official decision from FIFA, the situation remains open and dependent on developments in the Middle East. The competition regulations provide for special scenarios in the event of withdrawal for major reasons.

One option is to replace Iran with another national team through a special draw, which could also include teams already qualified.

The other alternative is for Group G to continue with three teams: New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.

Although the replacement is expected to come from Asia, the regulations do not limit the selection to this confederation. A final decision is expected to be made in the coming weeks.
