England women's team declared European champions

England have won the European Women's Football Championship after beating Spain on penalties to defend the title they won four years ago. The match ended 1-1 after regular time and extra time, with Mariona Caldentey putting Spain ahead and Alessia Russo equalising for England with a header.

England won 3-1 on penalties. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved two crucial shots, while Kelly converted the final penalty to secure the victory. It was the first time an English team had won a major tournament abroad and the third consecutive European title for coach Sarina Wiegman, who has won with two different teams.

England also becomes the first team to win a European Championship final in a single match, having been at a disadvantage in the first half.

Furthermore, this was the fourth time in this tournament that the team had been behind but managed to turn the tables. This success solidifies England's status as one of the strongest national teams in the world in women's football.
