The number of virus cases is increasing in Korça Pediatrics/ Advice from

In the Pediatric Emergency Room of Korça, there has been an increase in the number of cases with seasonal viruses, which has caused an influx in this ward. According to the head of pediatrics Robert Rado, in the Pediatric Emergency Room, about 60 cases per day of children presenting health problems with seasonal flu are presented. For Radon, this is a period when there is a continuity of flu cases and for him this type of influx is normal.

"Then the situation in our service in 2025, starting from the first month, there is an increase in the flow of children presenting to the pediatric service. But starting from the time we are going through and the epidemiological situation that is in Albania, for me it is a normal flow because we are in a period where the flu has started and continues with cases. The number of visits that are presented can be 50-60, there are cases even more or less, but the average is 50-60 visits. Mainly the cases have been with seasonal viruses or with flu as we call it."

Most children receive medical assistance at the pediatric clinic and are then treated at home. There are few cases that show more problems and require hospitalization. According to the head of pediatrics, parents are alarmed by the high temperature, which does not decrease at home even with the use of antipyretics. Among other things, it is seen that this flu can cause complications in the respiratory tract or even ear infections.

"In normal cases, the first 3 days are when any type of pathology will run its course and then the flu must be continuously monitored to see complications. Most cases come, have visits and leave. Cases that are judged to have complications come after the 3rd, 4th or 5th day or even later where it is seen that the flu may have caused complications that may be of the upper respiratory tract, lower respiratory tract where angina or ear infections are mainly included or lower respiratory tract where we divide them according to age groups. Age groups from 0-1 year are mainly bronchiolitis or bronchopneumonia, or 1-5 years old, etc. We treat these cases or complications such as gastrointestinal cases which in this season are not zero, we write them depending on the situation that the child presents and the child's condition."

The advice given by Rado in this situation consists of school-age children not going to schools and daycare centers for at least 5 days, as the flu can be easily transmitted to the latter. They should initially seek medical attention from their family doctor and then, in case of complications, they should go to the city's pediatrics.

"Preschool-age children with a fever should not go to daycare or kindergarten, and school-age children should not go to school for at least the first 5 days because the mode of transmission of viruses is known to be airborne contact or through secretions that are eliminated in the first 5 days by children with the flu. Instead of initially presenting to the emergency department in pediatrics, there is a referral system by going to the family doctor, who will see them, give them his instructions, antipyretics will be used at first because we have emphasized that there is no specific treatment for viruses. Treatment is symptomatic, depending on the complications, it must be judged and followed in dynamics, and adequate or equal treatment will be given according to the condition."

In this virus season, parents of children should be the ones to show more care and attention by avoiding crowds and contacts of their children in closed and public environments such as bars or schools. Hygiene is extremely important in such cases where the parent should wear a mask and be more careful regarding dirt./ CNA
