In Albania, 17% of children under 5 are obese, 3 times higher than the global

In Albania, for 2024, it results that 17% of children under 5 years of age are overweight.

Data on global obesity rates for children aged 0 to 5 years were published in the UNICEF 2025 report "Nutrition for Profit. How Food Environments Are Failing Children".

The data shows that Albania's level is almost 3 times higher than the global average of 5% and twice higher than the average of the Europe and Central Asia region of 8% for 2024.

Although the report estimates that there has been an improvement in the indicator, the obesity rate among children aged 0 to 5 years, from 22% in 2012, has dropped to 17% in 2024.

The report highlights that Albania has made progress towards meeting the 2030 objectives for reducing childhood obesity.

For the rate of obesity in children under 5 years of age, in the 2024 world ranking, Albania is positioned behind Australia, which has the highest level of obesity for children under 5 years of age, with 26% of them, and Tunisia with 18%.

In North Macedonia, according to the report's data for 2024, 12% of children under 5 years old are overweight, while in 2012 the data was 13% of children. According to the report, this country has not made progress.

In Serbia, it is expected that 12% of children aged 0 to 5 years will be overweight by 2024. Serbia has made progress compared to 2012 data, where obesity levels were 15%. While in Montenegro, the obesity rate has decreased from 15% in 2012 to 9% in 2024.

In Europe, among the countries with the highest percentage of childhood obesity are Greece with a level of 14% for 2024, Portugal with 9%, England with a level of 8%, Poland with 9%, and the Netherlands with 5%.

Among developed countries, Germany ranks both in Europe and globally with the lowest level of underweight children, with 3% of them for the age group up to 5 years. In Japan, obesity reached 2%.

The data shows that the lowest obesity rates globally are in underdeveloped or conflict-affected countries, such as Bangladesh with a 2% obesity rate by 2024, etc./ Monitor.al
