You can't reset your nervous system, but here's how to reduce stress

Much advice spread on social media talks about "resetting" or "healing" the nervous system during periods of stress, but experts emphasize that this is not a medically accurate concept.

According to specialists, the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary functions such as heartbeat, digestion, and emotional reactions, is divided into two parts: the sympathetic system, which is activated in stressful situations, and the parasympathetic system, which helps the body return to a normal state.

When stress becomes chronic, due to workload, financial problems, or other long-term factors, people may experience fatigue, irritability, and heightened sensitivity. However, this condition is not a “nervous system disorder” in the medical sense, but rather a natural reaction to prolonged stress.

Experts point out that terms like "nervous system overload" or "neural rewiring," widely used on the internet and in the wellness industry, have no clear scientific definition and are not supported by strong medical evidence.

Meanwhile, the polyvagal theory, often mentioned in this context, has been questioned by the scientific community and is not considered a solid basis for clinical treatments.

Experts suggest that stress management should be based on scientifically proven methods, such as regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, healthy nutrition, meditation and breathing techniques. Also, spending time in nature and artistic activities can help reduce stress levels.

In cases of high or persistent stress, experts advise seeking professional help from psychologists or mental health specialists.

According to them, improvement in the situation does not occur through "rapid resets", but through gradual and sustainable changes in lifestyle./ CNA
