Scientists discover optimal amount of sleep to reduce dementia risk

A new scientific study suggests that sleeping between 7 and 8 hours a night may be the optimal amount to reduce the risk of developing dementia in old age.

The research, conducted by a team at York University in Canada, analyzed data from 69 previous studies involving about 4.5 million people. The researchers examined the link between dementia and three key lifestyle factors: sleep duration, physical activity and time spent sitting.

According to the results, individuals who sleep less than 7 hours a night have about an 18% higher risk of dementia, while those who sleep more than 8 hours show an increase of about 28% in this risk.

In addition to sleep, the study highlights that regular physical activity and reduced sitting time are also associated with a lower risk of the disease. Less than 150 minutes of physical activity per week and prolonged sitting are considered factors that may increase risk.

The researchers emphasize that these results do not show a direct cause-and-effect relationship, but only a statistical association. They also warn that excessive sleep may in some cases be an early sign of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's.

According to them, a healthy lifestyle that includes regular sleep, physical activity, and less sitting can help improve brain health and delay the onset of dementia.

However, experts emphasize the need for further long-term studies to more precisely understand the relationship between these factors and dementia risk./ CNA
