Study links two simple eating habits to sustainable weight loss

A new study from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health has found that two simple habits, eating an early breakfast and extending overnight fasting, can help maintain a healthy weight in the long term.

Researchers analyzed data from 7,074 people aged 40 to 65 and found that those who ate breakfast earlier and avoided late-night eating had lower body mass index scores after five years.

According to the research team, these results are linked to circadian rhythms, internal biological clocks that regulate body functions over a 24-hour cycle. Eating earlier in the day is believed to help the body burn calories more efficiently and better control appetite.

Epidemiologist Luciana Pons-Muzzo emphasized that "extending overnight fasting, accompanied by an early dinner and breakfast, may contribute to maintaining a healthy weight."

On the other hand, the researchers found that eating breakfast later and consuming meals more frequently was associated with a higher BMI. The effects were particularly pronounced in premenopausal women.

Another interesting finding relates to intermittent fasting practices. According to epidemiologist Camille Lassale, skipping breakfast as part of intermittent fasting did not show any significant benefits in reducing body weight in the long term.

However, the researchers emphasize that the study does not directly prove cause and effect, but adds evidence to a growing field known as chrononutrition, which studies not only what we eat, but also when we eat.

Experts suggest that small changes to meal times, such as eating earlier and avoiding late-night eating, could be a simple strategy for weight management, although further studies are needed to fully confirm this link./ CNA
