Experts warn: This habit can worsen insomnia

Insomnia is one of the most prevalent health problems today, affecting millions of people worldwide.

According to data from the UK, around a third of adults in England report frequent symptoms of sleep deprivation.

Experts say that insomnia rarely occurs alone and is often linked to other health problems such as depression, anxiety, diabetes or chronic pain.

However, one of the most important discoveries of recent years is that insomnia should be treated as a disorder in its own right and not simply as a consequence of other illnesses.

According to sleep specialists, a very common habit can significantly worsen the situation: staying in bed for a long time trying to fall asleep.

This action, instead of helping, keeps the brain awake and over time disrupts the natural connection between bed and sleep.

Experts recommend that if you can't sleep, get out of bed and do calming activities like reading, listening to music, or breathing exercises. Only when you feel sleepy should you return to bed.

They also advise caution with daytime sleepiness, as it can reduce sleepiness at night. If necessary, a short nap of no more than 20 minutes in the afternoon is considered acceptable.

The most effective treatment for insomnia remains cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-I), which aims to change habits and thoughts that affect sleep. Meanwhile, the use of sleeping pills is not recommended as a long-term solution due to side effects and the risk of addiction.

Experts point out that early treatment of sleep problems can also improve other health conditions, including depression and chronic diseases./ CNA
