New study: Even low alcohol consumption can negatively affect the brain

A recent study conducted by researchers in the United States suggests that even low levels of alcohol consumption can have harmful consequences for the brain. According to the findings, people who drink alcohol, even in moderate amounts, may experience reduced blood flow to the brain and thinning of the cerebral cortex, the area responsible for advanced mental functions such as thinking and decision-making.

The researchers analyzed data from 45 healthy adults, ages 22 to 70, who had no history of alcohol abuse. Participants reported their drinking habits over the past year, the past three years, and their lifetime. On average, they consumed about 21 drinks per month, with a maximum of 54 drinks per month.

This data was compared with MRI brain scans, which measured cortical thickness and blood perfusion in the brain. The results showed a clear link between alcohol consumption and a decrease in these indicators, especially with perfusion – a key factor in supplying the brain with oxygen and nutrients.

According to the researchers, the effects of alcohol may be cumulative, worsening over time and with increasing age. They suggest that oxidative stress, a biological process that damages cells, may be one of the main mechanisms linking alcohol to brain damage.

However, the authors emphasize that the study does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, as it is based on data collected at a single point in time and on self-reports of the participants. Other factors such as diet and physical activity were not taken into account.

Despite the limitations, the findings reinforce a growing trend in scientific research questioning the idea of ??a “safe” level of alcohol consumption. The latest US dietary guidelines now recommend reducing overall alcohol consumption, without setting a specific daily limit.

Researchers call for further research to better understand the long-term effects of moderate alcohol consumption on the brain./ CNA
