Study: Weight gain at a young age linked to higher risk of death in the future

A new scientific study has raised concerns about the influence of age on when weight gain occurs, suggesting that weight gain at an early age is the most dangerous for long-term health.

The research conducted by Lund University analyzed data from more than 600,000 people, who were followed for a long period of time, focusing on weight changes from the ages of 17 to 60.

According to the results, people who first developed obesity between the ages of 17 and 29 were about 70% more likely to die from various causes during the follow-up period, compared to those who did not develop obesity until a later age, such as after their 60s.

Researchers point out that the longer an individual lives with overweight or obesity, the greater the negative impact on the body. This is related to biological processes such as chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and increased strain on the cardiovascular system.

The greatest risk observed in the study was related mainly to cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke. Links were also noted with type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer, which are known to be linked to obesity.

However, the researchers clarify that this research shows statistical associations and not necessarily direct cause-and-effect, as important factors such as diet, physical activity, and lifestyle were not fully included in the analysis.

Another interesting finding relates to differences between genders and ages: in some cases, the impact of obesity on the risk of death was more consistent in women, while in men stronger changes were observed according to the time when weight gain occurred.

The study authors emphasize that long-term exposure to obesity is one of the most important risk factors, suggesting that not only how much weight is gained, but also when it occurs, has a major impact on future health.

In conclusion, the researchers emphasize the importance of preventing obesity at a young age, considering it a key element for reducing the risk of chronic diseases and premature mortality in the population./ CNA
