Study: Antibiotics do not increase risk of celiac disease

A new scientific study refutes concerns that antibiotic use may increase the risk of developing celiac disease. Researchers report that there is no evidence of a causal link between antibiotics and this autoimmune disease.

The research, published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, analyzed data from tens of thousands of patients. The results showed that people with celiac disease were 24% more likely to have used antibiotics compared to healthy individuals.

However, another group with healthy guts was even more likely – around 50% – to have used antibiotics.

According to the study's lead author, Maria Ulnes from the University of Gothenburg, these findings suggest that previous links between antibiotics and celiac disease may have been misinterpreted.

"We do not see a causal link between celiac disease and antibiotics," she said, adding that their use should continue according to medical recommendations without unnecessary fear.

The study included about 28,000 people with celiac disease, over 133,000 healthy individuals and more than 33,000 siblings, as well as an additional analysis of hundreds of thousands of people with healthy intestines.

Experts emphasize that the development of celiac disease is complex and can be influenced by various factors, such as susceptibility to infections, diet, and changes in the intestinal microbiota.

In conclusion, the researchers emphasize that responsible use of antibiotics remains important, but there is no reason to avoid them due to fear of celiac disease./ CNA
