New antibody created against Epstein-Barr virus, which affects 95% of people

Scientists have made an important step in the fight against the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), one of the most widespread viruses in the world that is believed to infect around 95% of adults.

A team of researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington in the US has developed new antibodies that target two key proteins of the virus, inhibiting its ability to infect B cells - an essential component of the immune system.

EBV usually does not cause noticeable symptoms, but once it enters the body, it remains for life and has been linked to serious diseases such as some types of cancer and multiple sclerosis.

In laboratory tests on mice engineered with human-like immune systems, one of the developed antibodies showed strong protection against infection. The researchers were able to isolate a total of 10 new antibodies, some targeting the gp350 protein and others gp42, both important for the virus's entry into cells.

Experts emphasize that this innovative approach could pave the way not only for treatments against EBV, but also for the development of antibodies against other pathogens.

This discovery is considered particularly important for patients undergoing organ or bone marrow transplants, who are at higher risk of EBV-related complications due to a weakened immune system.

However, researchers emphasize that further tests and clinical trials are still needed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of these antibodies in humans.

This development constitutes a promising step towards controlling a virus that affects the vast majority of the global population and is associated with serious health consequences./ CNA
