Stone carving/ One of the most original motifs in the Gjirokastra bazaar

The renowned stone craftsman, Muhedin Makri, years ago brought back the characteristic noises of artisans to the Gjirokastra bazaar. He has been gone for several years, but his son Ermali continues this profession with great passion in the bazaar.

The objects carved in stone within this unit are countless and the motifs are gathered from the city's long tradition of stone carving. There are motifs that come from the floral world, from costumes, from the city's architecture, from the streets, from various new and old symbolisms in time.

Despite his hard work, Ermali regrets how the old bazaar has "deteriorated" today, a bazaar where the craftsmen are counted on the fingers while all the spaces are occupied by tables from bars and restaurants.

" It is a special craft that not everyone can do, because here I see someone coming out and saying I am an artisan, but the many crafts that come to our market, which is known as the cradle of artisanal products, are not handmade. As an artisan, I feel sorry that many products are imported. 1 person here has taken over 10-15 shops and has filled the market with Chinese products. Foreigners tell me that I am more special because they see that I work by hand. The crafts are numerous, but there is little interest and we are discriminated against here by the municipality and other institutions ," Makri said, among other things.

Stone carving is among the most original motifs of the Gjirokastra bazaar. Without the hammer and the noise of the crafts, the whole life of the bazaar would have no meaning./ CNA
