"DP on the wrong path"/ Hasimja: Berisha has support, they are unable

Political scientist Ermal Hasimja commented today on the situation in which the Democratic Party finds itself, as the largest opposition party in the country.

In a television appearance, Hasimja stated that strategically, the DP is on the wrong path after uniting with the majority for Electoral Reform.

Hasimja also spoke about the current leadership of the DP by Sali Berisha, whom he said he supports, while adding that those who are against him have not yet found a replacement.

"The DP missed a very good chance to gain credibility with the electorate by joining with the majority and Rama to make changes to the Electoral Code, which aimed to eliminate small parties.

On the one hand, the DP is offered as a center of gravity for the unity of the opposition, while on the other hand, it behaves differently, and this is a big problem for this party. It would have gained many partnership points if it had maintained a principled stance, not simply defending the small parties that represent 150 thousand votes, but above all proving to the Albanian electorate that it has integrity and political morality.

So it is paradoxically weakening itself. From a strategic point of view, whoever advised the DP on this path, I think, thought wrong.

The question is this: are we able as a society and the opposition to produce a candidate who will manage to get the votes of the opposition parties and the gray electorate? At these moments, the DP is finding it very difficult to guarantee even 100% of its own votes, let alone get the votes of the undecided.

"From the point of view of legitimacy, this is the right of the party itself. We can only give opinions or suggestions, but they have no value. As long as Sali Berisha continues and is still there, this means that he has strong support. Those who do not agree with Mr. Berisha are not a majority and are not able to replace him with someone else," Hasimja said./CNA
