Lifting of Berisha's "non grata"/Meta, reaction from prison

The leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has reacted to the news about the removal of the "non grata" status of Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha from the USA.

In his post on social media, Meta writes that he maintains the same position as five years ago, stating that that decision was a "mafia conspiracy aimed at annihilating political pluralism in Albania and poisoning relations with the US."

I cannot take any exception to the public stance I took five years ago, as President of the Republic, regarding the mafia conspiracy that aimed not only to annihilate political pluralism in Albania, but also to poison the historical and strategic relations between Albania and the United States of America.

The McGonigal affair explains very clearly all the scandals that the corrupt Charles McGonigal financed to destroy pluralism and the opposition in Albania by misusing corrupt officials like McGonigal and many others.

The announcement was made by DP MPs, while the State Department is expected to issue an official announcement. Sali Berisha was declared "non grata" by the United States on May 19, 2021.

The decision was announced by the US Department of State, which included him and his family on the list of undesirable persons, barring them from entering the US due to accusations of involvement in corruption and undermining democracy in Albania. /CNA
