Von der Leyen: Negotiated peace needed to end Middle East conflict

During an official visit to Australia, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her deep concern about the ongoing conflict involving Iran, stressing the urgent need for a negotiated solution.

In a joint statement in Canberra with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, she said it was "of great importance" to achieve peace through dialogue and stop hostilities in the Middle East.

Von der Leyen also announced that several European Union countries are considering a mission to protect the Strait of Hormuz after the conflict ends. The sea route is considered vital for global energy supplies.

She warned that the consequences of the conflict are already being felt in the global economy, including rising gas and oil prices, as well as impacts on businesses and societies around the world./ CNA
