Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine is ready to start shipping millions of tons of grain to its southern ports and is waiting for Turkey and the United Nations, which have agreed to oversee the shipments, to begin the operation.
"We are fully prepared. We have sent all signals to our partners, the UN and Turkey, and our army guarantees the security situation," Zelensky said, according to a statement from his office on July 29.
Zelensky has personally visited one of the ports, Chornomorsk, from where grain shipments will depart, to assess the situation, the announcement states.
Kiev and Moscow signed a deal on July 22, brokered by Turkey and the UN, to free three of Ukraine's ports: Odesa, Chernomorsk and Yuzhny, which had been blocked since Russia launched its invasion of its neighbor in late February. .
The agreement signed in Istanbul enables the transfer of wheat exports from Ukraine, as the world risks facing a food crisis, mainly due to Moscow's unprovoked attack on Ukraine.
More than 20 million tons of wheat have been blocked in southern Ukraine since Russia launched its unprovoked attack on Ukraine on February 24./ REL
