Iranian police arrest "spies" suspected of having ties to Israel

Iranian police have arrested the leader and four other members of a suspected espionage ring that Tehran says have ties to Israeli intelligence services.

This was announced on July 28 by the counter-espionage organization of the Law Enforcement Unit in Iran.

In a statement published by the Iranian News Agency (ILNA), authorities said members of the network had gathered "vital" information about Iran, which they then passed on to Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad, in exchange for financial rewards.

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office, which oversees the Mossad, did not comment on the reported arrests.

Members of the group were also suspected of spreading propaganda against Iran, the statement said.

It also says that Iranian authorities seized advanced electronic equipment, SIM cards and mobile phones from members.

Iran has repeatedly accused arch-enemy Israel of alleged acts of sabotage at its nuclear research facilities, as well as cyber attacks and assassinations of nuclear scientists.REL
