Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country will increase its electricity exports to the European Union and aim to become one of the guarantors of European energy security as Russia cuts gas supplies to the bloc.
"We are preparing to increase our electricity exports to consumers in the European Union," Zelenskiy said on July 27 in his evening address to the nation.
Exports will not only allow Ukraine to increase its income, but also help its partners resist Russian energy pressure, he said.
Ukraine's electricity grid was connected to the European grid in mid-March - allowing supplies to continue despite the Russian occupation.
Ukraine started exporting electricity to the EU via Romania in early July.
Germany's energy regulator said earlier that Russian state energy giant Gazprom cut gas deliveries to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to about 20 percent of capacity as expected on July 27.
The North Stream 1 pipeline is 1,200 kilometers long and stretches under the Baltic Sea, from the Russian coast near St. Petersburg to northeastern Germany./ REL
