A mother and her child have died after being hit by a devastating avalanche during a ski trip in Lapland, Finland.

Mother and son were found dead in the snow in the Pyhakuru Valley near Sweden, reports "The Sun". 

Temperatures in this area dropped to -20 degrees due to strong wind.

Cops said they launched a search and rescue operation on Tuesday after receiving an emergency call from the mother around 2pm.

The head of Lapland's rescue services, Harri Paldanius, said the woman told emergency staff that the wind had blown her skis away and that "it was really cold and it was getting dark".

The woman reportedly turned off her phone to save battery and when police contacted her again, she did not answer. 

The mother was found buried in the snow on Tuesday, while her son's body was not found until Thursday./ CNA
