British police are investigating a landmark case involving the alleged rape of a teenage girl's avatar (personalized digital character) by strangers in a virtual reality game, Protothema reports.

According to euronews, it is the first time such an investigation into sexual assault has been conducted in the "metaverse" and there has been a backlash from people who believe that the authorities should only deal with "real" and not "virtual" crimes.

As the publication clarifies, the victim, who at the time of the attack was connected to the virtual universe with a headset, did not suffer any physical damage.

British authorities did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the metaverse attack, to protect the privacy of the minor girl.

Although the teenager did not experience physical abuse, police sources say she may have suffered psychological trauma comparable to that of a real-life rape victim.

"There are emotional and psychological effects on the victim that can affect them for much longer than any physical injury," a senior police officer told the Daily Mail.

However, British authorities are concerned that under current law, which defines sexual assault as non-consensual "physical touching" in a sexual manner, prosecuting the suspects (if they are eventually identified) may be impossible.
