Tokyo: The first World Championship for garbage collection

The first Spogomi World Championship took place this week in the center of Tokyo. Spogomi is a new sport that consists of the words "sport" and "gomi" which in Japanese means trash or trash. Spogomi can be translated as "garbage collection race".

Teams of three compete against each other to find and sort as much trash as possible within a predetermined time period. Winners are announced according to a points system based on waste types.

The team from Pakistan was announced as the winner of the 2023 Spogom World Championship.

Mass movement

In Japan Spogomi has become a mass movement. According to the Nippon Foundation, Japan's largest non-profit organization, which has been officially promoting the sport since 2019, 150,000 people have participated in the various competitions so far.

Especially schools offer Spogom as an extracurricular activity in the afternoons. At the beginning of the year, this sport became known outside of Japan, and since then, "athletes" from many other countries have participated in the Spogomi competitions, collecting and selecting trash. In the first Spogom World Championship, all continents were represented with teams from Australia and the Philippines to Morocco, Germany and the USA./ DW
