Starmer holds phone conversation with Trump/Strait of Hormuz, focus of

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has held a phone call with US President Donald Trump. Starmer told reporters today that the two leaders discussed the ceasefire with Iran and military options for the Strait of Hormuz.

Starmer said he told Trump that if the ceasefire with Iran is to hold, then it must include neighboring Persian Gulf countries. 

"These Gulf states are Iran's neighbours. And so, if the ceasefire is going to hold, and we hope it will, it has to include them. They have very strong views on the Strait of Hormuz," Starmer said, speaking from Qatar.

Starmer's call with Trump comes amid recent strained US-UK relations, as well as wider tensions between the Trump administration and NATO, after member states refused to engage directly in the US-Israeli war with Iran, prompting Trump to sharply attack the alliance.

Speaking about the UK's relationship with Gulf countries, which were embroiled in conflict as Iran launched retaliatory attacks on its neighbours, Starmer stressed the importance of "our standing by them, as an ally, as a friend to them in a point of need." Starmer made the comments as he wrapped up a three-day diplomatic tour of the Gulf region. /CNA
