The White House intensifies efforts to ensure the approval of aid to Ukraine

The White House will increase engagement with US lawmakers to try to reach a bipartisan deal that would provide military aid to Ukraine and Israel while strengthening border security, a Democratic senator said Sunday.

Republicans have insisted that approving additional funding for Ukraine must be accompanied by major changes to securing the border between the United States and Mexico.

A group of senators from both parties trying to broker a compromise have made little progress with less than a week to go before Congress begins its Christmas recess.

"The White House will be more engaged this week," Sen. Chris Murphy, the top Democratic negotiator, said on NBC News' "Meet the Press." Mr. Murphy said it was important to know whether President Joe Biden would sign any potential deal.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters news agency reported last week that President Biden's administration is open to new restrictions on asylum for migrants if a deal is reached.

Senator Murphy said Republican demands for border security were "unreasonable" and that they were "playing games with the security of the world" by tying military aid to US border security measures.

Some Republicans have called for legal provisions to immediately deport migrants who cross the border illegally without being given a chance to seek asylum. They have also called to greatly scale back President Biden's programs that have allowed hundreds of thousands of immigrants to enter the United States legally./ VOA
