Serbia completes the works for the interconnection with a gas pipeline in

On Sunday, Serbia finished the interconnection works on a gas pipeline in Bulgaria, which will enable it to reduce its dependence on Russia.

This link will run the pipeline from the Bulgarian city of Novi Iskar to the Serbian city of Nis, giving Serbia access to gas coming from Azerbaijan and the LNG terminal at the port of Alexandroupolis in Greece.

The European Commission donated 49.6 million euros for the construction of the connecting pipeline. 25 million euros were provided through a loan from the European Investment Bank, while 22.5 million were provided by Serbia.

"With this pipeline, we are providing alternative gas supplies, apart from Russian gas," said the Serbian Minister of Energy, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic. The President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the President of Romania Rumen Radev also participated in the ceremony organized in Nis.

"Today we are changing the energy map of Europe", said Mr. Radev. "The pipeline is important for the entire region. The war in Ukraine made us think about good neighborly relations and support".

On November 15, Serbia signed an agreement with Azerbaijan to buy 400 million cubic meters of natural gas per year starting in 2024./ VOA
