The length of asylum procedures in Germany was shortened last year, despite an increase in the number of applications.

The official application took an average of 6.8 months in 2023, compared with 7.6 months the previous year, according to Government data presented during parliamentary questions.

The German government said the length of court proceedings for appeals against asylum decisions has also fallen by around five months in 2023.

However, taking an average of 20.7 months, compared to 26 months in 2022, the entire asylum process is still long and varies widely across the country.

In the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate it takes about five months, while in states such as Hesse and Lower Saxony the average duration of the asylum process is more than two years on average. Meanwhile, in Brandenburg it is the longest, where asylum seekers mostly wait over three years.

Speaking to the RND network, Calra Bunger, a member of the left-wing party Die Linke, which requested the data from the Government, called for "better staffing and more effective operation of administrative courts, in particular in reducing the duration of court proceedings".

Lengthy asylum procedures are burdensome for refugees because they prevent them from integrating and create a sense of insecurity, Bunger said.

"It is unacceptable that asylum seekers have to wait an average of one and a half years until their status becomes clear," she said./ REL
