Pentagon chief: Bakhmuti has more symbolic than strategic value

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Monday that if Russian troops manage to take control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, it would not bring a decisive change in the conflict.

" I think it has more symbolic value than strategic and operational value ," Secretary Austin told reporters during a visit to Jordan.

For months, Bakhmuti has been engulfed in intense fighting amid Russia's attempts to take control of this city, which lies in Ukraine's Donetsk province.
