China increases military budget/Warnings and threats continue

China will increase military spending by more than 7% this year as it warns of "escalating" threats.

This decision was announced at the National People's Congress (NPC), which will confirm President Xi Jinping's third term.

Beijing's military budget of around $225 billion (£186 billion) dwarfs that of the United States, which is four times larger.

But analysts believe China is understating how much it spends on defense.

Outgoing Premier Li Keqiang told the NPC that "external efforts to suppress and control China are escalating."

The increase in military spending comes as Xi invests in worsening ties with the US over the war in Ukraine and the latest spy balloon saga.

US officials have also repeatedly warned that China could invade Taiwan in the coming years. China has held ever-increasing displays of military force in the air and at sea around Taiwan, including the launch of ballistic missiles.

China views self-governing Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually come under Beijing's control.

The NPC will also unveil the new premier, China's equivalent of a prime minister who traditionally oversees the economy and administrative aspects of government.

Li Qiang, one of Xi's most trusted colleagues, is expected to take the role./ CNA.al
