Rubio: Hamas must be eradicated

US top diplomat Marco Rubio discussed the Gaza ceasefire with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel. The visit coincided with the arrival of a shipment of 2,000-pound US bombs.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington fully supports the aims of the war Israel is waging in the Gaza Strip, stressing that the Palestinian militant group Hamas "must be exterminated."

With his statements after a meeting he had on Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Rubio risks undermining the fragile ceasefire agreement, the first phase of which ends in two weeks.

"As long as Hamas continues to remain a force that can govern, that can administer, or as a force that can threaten to use violence, peace becomes impossible," Rubio said. Hamas, which has reasserted control over Gaza since the ceasefire took effect last month, "must be exterminated," Rubio said.

Accusations against Iran

Rubio then also accused Iran of fomenting instability in the region through its support for militant groups like Hamas.

"Behind every terrorist group, behind every act of violence, behind every destabilizing activity, behind everything that threatens peace and stability for millions of people who call this region their home, there is Iran," he said.
