Pope Francis hospitalized with bronchitis

Pope Francis was hospitalized this Friday for tests and treatment for bronchitis, marking another episode of health problems for the 88-year-old pontiff.

Francis, who has been experiencing breathing problems in recent days, has delegated officials to read his speeches. The pope is understood to have held his morning meetings as planned before heading to Rome's Gemelli hospital.

He was hospitalized for "some necessary diagnostic tests and to continue treatment for persistent bronchitis in a hospital setting," the Vatican said.

A few hours later, it was said that two audiences scheduled for Saturday and Monday by the Pope had been canceled, while a cardinal would lead Mass on Sunday in Francis' place.

The Argentine pope, who took office as head of the Catholic Church in 2013, will stay at the Gemelli in a suite used exclusively by popes, which has its own chapel.

The pope, who had part of his lung removed in his youth, has been suffering from breathing difficulties for more than a week. /CNA
