Massive landslide in Indonesia/ 17 dead and 70 missing on Java island

A massive landslide has killed at least 17 people and left more than 70 missing on Indonesia's main island of Java. The incident occurred in the village of Pasir Langu in West Java province, following heavy rains that had fallen since Friday.

The landslide occurred on the slopes of Mount Burangrang, engulfing about 34 houses under mud, rocks and trees. Many residents were buried under the mass of earth, while rescue teams have recovered more bodies and continue searching the area.

Rescue efforts are continuing, but difficult terrain and bad weather are preventing the use of heavy machinery. Teams are also using drones and manual digging to search for survivors or the bodies of the missing.

The cause of the landslide is the extraordinary rainfall during the storm season (usually from October to March), which has caused the ground to lose stability and trigger landslides.
