Winter storm "paralyzes" the US / Extreme temperatures affect 230

A giant winter storm has swept across the United States, threatening more than half the country and putting federal and state authorities on alert.

So far, 16 states and the District of Washington have declared states of emergency, while over 230 million citizens are expected to be affected by extreme temperatures, heavy snowfall and ice.

The powerful weather system began to form in the western areas of the country and is moving towards the South, Midwest and East Coast, where it is expected to bring up to 35-45 centimeters of snow in some regions, as well as rain and freezing rain that risks paralyzing roads and energy infrastructure.

Authorities are warning of long power outages, especially in southern states unprepared for arctic temperatures. Residents have rushed to stock up on food, water, blankets and generators, while many stores have reported empty shelves.

Air travel has been hit hard, with over 1,400 flights cancelled, while airlines have urged passengers to reschedule their trips. Airports and emergency services have also been put on full alert.

Meteorologists warn that sub-zero temperatures will last for several days, while climate experts emphasize that such extreme phenomena are related to increased weather instability, as a result of climate change.

Federal and state authorities are coordinating to deal with the situation, while citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and follow emergency guidelines./ CNA
