Putin says Western troops would be 'legitimate targets' if they were

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that any Western troops in Ukraine would be considered a "legitimate target for defeat," a day after it was announced that dozens of Western countries had pledged to contribute to a possible peacekeeping force there if a ceasefire deal was reached.

"This is one of the root causes of the war: the attempt to include Ukraine in NATO. So if any troops appear there, especially during ongoing hostilities, we assume that they will be legitimate targets for defeat," Putin said, speaking at an economic forum in Russia's Far East on Friday.

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that 26 countries are "supporting security guarantees" for his country "in various formats."

"We have agreed that there will be a presence," he said, adding that what that will look like will depend on the country involved. "The presence is different. It is in the sky, at sea and on land," he said./ CNA, translated by CNN
