Expected to be sworn in as Chancellor today/ Who is Friedrich Merz?

Friedrich Merz, 69, is expected to be sworn in today, Tuesday, as the new leader of the country with the largest economy in Europe, ending a six-month political deadlock in Berlin.

Merz leads the conservative Christian Democratic Union, but he has never held a senior government post with significant leadership responsibilities before. He has never been a federal minister, or a state premier, or even the mayor of a small town.

If elected, he will be the oldest chancellor to take office since Konrad Adenauer, the first head of the post-war German government (1949–1963).

The previous weeks were also the first time he had participated in negotiations aimed at forming a government coalition. The media, as well as some unidentified representatives from the negotiating teams, have occasionally accused him of this.

The SPD leaders, Lars Klingbeil and Saskia Esken, and the head of the CDU's Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Söder, all have experience in these kinds of disputes.
