French President Arrives at the White House/What Will Trump and Macron Discuss?

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the White House today for talks with US President Donald Trump. They are expected to cover prospects for ending the war in Ukraine amid sharp differences over how to proceed.

Macron became the first European leader to visit Trump since he regained power a month ago. The two leaders will attend a G7 summit, hold bilateral talks and then chair a joint news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.

Trump and Macron are expected to discuss the war in Ukraine, where both have expressed their views. Macron has argued that any negotiated end to the war must come with "strong and credible security guarantees for the Ukrainians."

Trump's tariffs are also likely to be a topic of discussion with the European Union, of which France is a member.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will visit Trump later this week, amid alarm in Europe over the situation in Ukraine and Moscow over the three-year conflict. /CNA
