Zelenskiy: Ready to resign if it means peace for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he is ready to step down from his post if it means peace in Ukraine and added that he would trade his departure from office for Ukraine's entry into NATO.

"If such a thing (would mean) peace for Ukraine, if you really think it is necessary for me to leave office, I am ready," Mr. Zelenskiy said when asked during a press conference whether he would be ready to leave office if it meant achieving peace.

" I would exchange this immediately for NATO (membership), if that is the condition, immediately ," the president added.

US President Donald Trump has insisted that elections be held in Ukraine, calling Mr Zelenskiy a "dictator", apparently a reference to the fact that the Ukrainian leader's five-year term officially ends in 2024.

Mr. Trump's criticism of Mr. Zelenskiy came amid a significant deterioration in relations between the two leaders in recent weeks.

President Zelenskiy has opposed the idea of ??elections amid a full-scale war, a position supported by his main domestic political opponents.

The Ukrainian president also said he wanted to see Trump as a partner of Ukraine rather than a mediator between Kiev and Moscow.

"I really want it to be more than just mediation... this is not enough," he said at a press conference in Kiev./ VOA
