German elections/ Full voting results released

In Germany, the results for all 299 constituencies from Sunday's elections have now been announced. In less than 24 hours since the February 23rd elections, the full results, expressed in votes and percentages for political parties, have also been released.

The elections were held to elect the 630 members of the 21st Bundestag. These are the fourth snap elections in the post-war history of the Federal Republic of Germany after those in 1972, 1983 and 2005. Voter turnout was 82.5%, the highest since German reunification.

The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz and the Christian Social Union (CSU) won the elections.

The center-left Social Democrats (SPD), led by current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, recorded not only their worst result in the federal election, but also their biggest loss of votes compared to previous elections.

The neoliberal Free Democratic Party (FDP), whose withdrawal from the coalition triggered the snap election, also suffered heavy losses. The party will not enter the Bundestag after failing to meet the 5% threshold. /CNA
